Minutes:
- Attendance: Justin Babcock, Ernie Bowden, Mark Bushman, Bob Clark, Cliff Murphy, Josh Owens, Eric Roper, Kyle Ryan, Millie (Justin’s dog)
- “Cocktail hour” – checking out some homebrews from Justin and Mark, general discussions
- Introduction/Announcements (starting at ~7:00):
- The group ordering and delivery of homebrew ingredients and equipment from Xtreme Brewing in Laurel has been very successful thus far. We’ve decided to set a “standard” delivery date of the 3rd Friday in each month. We’ll attempt to send out an email at the beginning of the week as a reminder to everyone.
- There was much discussion regarding the Good Beer Festival, our representation there, the need for more members to support (3 more needed per day), as well as the homebrew competition.
- A brief mention of the WFF homebrew competition that’s coming up on October 23rd.
- Discussion of the Burley Oak Collaboration effort. We’ve received several ideas for a beer, the plan is to discuss with Bryan this week and hopefully get a recipe nailed down next week.
- The November meeting date will depend on when the Burley Oak beer is finished
- A Dogfish Head tour may happen, depending on interest. Most likely it won’t be until late October.
- Finally, Nick Wroblewski’s December beer tour was briefly discussed. This will be occurring on December 12th. Contact Nick if you’re interested in going.
- Justin reviewed the brewing process for our yeast experiment. See the .pdf in our meeting minutes folder.
- The group tasted each of the 5 experimental beers. There were noticeable differences in the yeast contributing flavors, as was hypothesized for the experiment. Some unexpected outcomes were the off-flavors from the WLP001 (thought to be over-pitching related) as well as the unharmonious marriage of the hop flavor and the British ale yeast estery flavors. There could have been some other contributing factors to the British ale yeast esters.
- Meeting adjourned at ~9:30.
